Voting With The Nose Held Tightly

In a few discussions at other blogs, the subject of voting for "the lesser of two evils" came up. Naturally, in this upcoming November election, McCain is clearly the lesser of two evils. But the point made was that some just don't want to go that route anymore. One claimed to be "force-fed" McCain and doesn't much care to be.

Well.

My response was that I don't think we were so much force-fed McCain as much as suffering the ramifications of our own inactions. In 1994, Newt Gingrich led a conservative revival with the "Contract With America" and all was good. Since then, it seems that the general feeling has been one of complacency, that things will always be such with the right-wing side of things. This has obviously not been the case and the midterm elections certified it with the loss of Republican control in Congress. Some think it will get worse come November.

So what to do? Our job, as conservatives, Republicans, right-wingers, traditionalists, and people of faith has always been to be involved. To stay on top of the issues and to let our representatives know what we think about issues and their positions on them. Allowing the Obamanation to win won't prove anything to anyone except that we are bigger idiots than the left ever could possibly have conceived.

But should even that evidence of the coming Apocalypse occur, it is encumbent upon us all to get involved and stay there. Yeah, that means making time in our busy lives for staying abreast of current events, writing, calling, emailing our representatives constantly to TELL them what we expect of them. Politicians are needy creatures. They need our approval and they need our support. When a DOMA type bill comes up for consideration, we need to be on the horn letting our reps know they need to support it. Even if our rep is an idiot like Dick Durbin or Barak Obama, we need to continually let them know.

In fact, it's even more important if our rep is the guy for whom we didn't vote. Imagine being some goofy Democrat and getting nothing but calls and complaints from constituents. Imagine being constantly told that every move you make, or intend to make, is wrong or offensive or contrary to the will of the people. A Dem would fold like a lawn chair.

So we need to do this now. Our reps, whether we voted for them or not, our party, local chapters as well as national, to let them know what we expect, and also for giving kudos when we approve of their moves, we need to stay involved. We need real leaders. We need to show them what a leader looks like, so we don't have to hold our noses in order to defeat absolute bad choices like Obama, with a vote for a choice that just ain't good enough, like McCain.

In the meantime, hold it tightly and vote for McCain.

Solely based on national security, there is enough reason to vote for McCain (D-AZ). The Barack Hussein Obama definitely seems comfortable with his friends in the Hezb'Allah having nuclear weapons.

Obama has a God-complex like most liberals. He believes he can talk the baddies out of their evil ways Captain Picard-style with Oprah Winfrey therapy sessions. Unlike enlightened liberals, McCain can tell his friends from his enemies, and believes there *is* such a thing as a friend and an enemy.

I now have no doubt McCain will Schwarzenegger us and pass any socialist slop that comes to his desk. This will continue the deterioration of the GOP, as we get the blame for socialist screw-ups and have our brand ruined. That being said, in a time of risk and danger, one must support country over Party.

Welcome, Jason. I don't recall that you have ever posted a comment here. If so, and I can't say my memory is near infallible, welcome back.

Regarding the other point of my post, do you agree that more citizen involvement is in order to insure more conservative candidates in the future?

"do you agree that more citizen involvement is in order to insure more conservative candidates in the future?"

I have no idea. The evangelicals critically wounded Romney in Iowa, and when FDT was drafted, Rudy's numbers began to tank. McCain was the last man standing.

You think Thompson was drafted? That's odd. I always thought that he was simply waiting for his moment, particularly since the whole circus began so abnormally early. Obviously, it didn't work.

But the point I was trying to make is that a real hue and cry from the right would go a long way toward preventing a replay in the future. I offer two events to support this theory:

Harriet Myers

Comprehensive Immigration Reform

If conservatives used the same type of activity to insist the party support true conservatives, to hold the feet of those already in office to act like the conservatives they are expected to be, I believe this will bring about a Great Awakening of conservatism. People inherently gravitate to conservatism when it is properly explained and put into action. This is doable. What say you, or anyone else?

Good post! It's the same all over. Political activists who want to impose their politically correct agenda count on conservatives not being politically involved - which is understandable in one way because so much in politics is demeaning to those involved. But as you say, if we want it to be different, we've got to speak up.

Seems fairly obvious to me, Andrew. Welcome.

A vote for a Republican is a vote against a Democrat, and that in itself, is a reason to vote for McCain.

By the way, I'm back

Glad to see it, Mark.

Good to hear your comments on my blog, Marshall, and interesting as always to read your posts. Keep in touch.

I can’t understand why more people can’t see it. McCain is the Frog Boiler!

What do I mean? There is an old allegory about how to boil a frog. It is said that if you drop a frog into a pot of boiling water it will immediately jump out.

But if you drop a frog in water that is slightly warm and turn up the heat gradually then the frog just sits there and lets itself be boiled alive, without attempting to jump out of the pot, without even knowing that it is indeed being boiled alive.

This allegory has been applied again, and again regarding the American people’s reaction to liberalism/socialism. And it is pretty clear who is who if you apply this allegory to this year’s election.

So let's vote for the candidate who will make the frog jump out of the pot so we can have a true conservative in 2012. Otherwise we will all get gradually boiled alive.

After all it took Carter to get us Reagan.

Anon,

First, please find a nom de plume. It will separate you from other anonymous commenters while still remaining anonymous. Thanks in advance.

Secondly, I cannot abide your notion of letting Obama have the Big Chair in hopes that it will spur conservatives to action. Too dangerous in my view. Sure, I think the nation can weather most anything, but look at what Carter did to us. No sir. Vote for the less crappy guy and get involved in the meantime. Don't forget that as many as three SCOTUS seats may open after the election. We can't leave that to Obama.

Marshall,

I hear ya! I’ve heard the arguments about an Obama presidency – so little actually known about the man, Supreme Court judges, ala Carter, ties to questionable characters, elitism, etc. Voting for McCain is a vote against Obama and all that jazz.

But I’m experiencing a severe case of déjà vu.

I remember when George H. Bush was running for prez. He was never considered a real conservative. He got the nod, because Regan was so loved. I remember when Dole got the Republican nomination. He was never considered a “real” conservative.

You know, I’m damn tired of voting for whomever the Repub establishment throws out there. I suspect that if you were to look back through history you’d find a pattern. A pattern that both parties have promoted.

Many highly educated and savvy people have suggested that the powers that be will “pick” our choices, knowing that most will feel they really have a choice, therefore feeling included in the process, and somewhat satisfied, even if their “choice” didn’t win.

I’m not sure if I’m quite that jaded yet. I do believe that we conservative are taken for granted, that the higher-ups feel certain they can count on our votes, because they’ve successfully scared us into voting against the other candidate.

Excuse my bluntness, but screw that crap!

I have faith in this country and its people. If I’m pissed at the establishment and vote Barr, and Obama is voted into office it won’t be the end of the world, it might just be a wake up call to the more right thinking among us. We will survive, this country and its people are too strong to fall (or succeed) due to the presidency of one person.

It might just be time to stand up and shout.

"this country and its people are too strong to fall"

This is not guaranteed.

Do you think the Ayatollahs are developing nuclear for peaceful energy use? Ahmadinejad promises "the United States and the Zionist regime of Israel will soon come to the end of their lives."

Keep in mind, we're the Great Satan, not the little Satan.

I agree we will survive. Perhaps many of our largest cities will be incinerated, but we'll survive.

Holey Moley!

Guess I better be glad my in-laws have 50 acres in the middle of nowhere...I live in Houston.

Once again, Blamin, we can shout now, and we damned well better. But I'd rather shout knowing I don't have to worry about what harm Obama is doing to the nation. I can't reiterate my concern over the possibility that he'll get to nominate SCOTUS candidates. Not while congress is so heavily Dem at this time, and possibly more so after November.

I say again that we are where we are by our own lack of involvement and that we can push those in power by staying involved. Get on the phone.

You’re right Marsh, I just feel like my stepsister has invited me to the prom. Kind of embarrassed by my date, but unwilling to miss the show.

Jason, I agree the threats facing our nation are very real, and any that would discount the threats (“Iran is such a small county, they can’t possibly pose a serious threat to us” per Obama The Wise) are “fifty kind of fools”.

As a matter of fact, Iran’s recent testing of long range missiles should be front-page news, top of the hour lead-ins on the networks every, each and every day. I remember a time when this threat would have been taken care of long ago. Screw the UN’s reaction to our pro-action!

Each and every reporter should be insisting on concrete plans from the candidates on how to handle this situation. Who gives a flying shit about Jackson’s wish to castrate that which is not there to castrate.
